A head's up play at shortstop by E.J. Stanton led to a magnificent double play in the top of the seventh inning, and Ben Redfield drove in the winning run in the bottom half Monday night in Red Bluff's 4-3 victory over Springfield, Ore.
With a runner on second and one out in the top of the seventh, Stanton's bobble of a ground ball turned into a blessing. The runner broke for third on contact and rounded the bag after Stanton misplayed the ball. Probably having no play at first, Stanton instead fired a strike to third baseman Ben Redfield for a surprising fielder's choice, nabbing the lead runner for the second out. On the same play, the batter attempted to advance to second and was gunned down by Redfield to end the threat.

Lucas Sandow

Left-handed batter Lucas Sandow drag bunted for a base hit with one out in the bottom of the seventh and stole second base to get into scoring position. Cody Gappa was intentionally walked with two outs to set up a force play, but Redfield singled on a 1-2 count to drive in Sandow for the walk-off RBI.
Gappa pitched 1 2/3 shutout innings in relief to earn the victory on the mound. Redfield started on the hill and pitched five strong innings, giving up one earned run on three hits while walking one and striking out seven. Robby Annis started the sixth inning out of the bullpen, but after getting a groundout he made an error, walked a batter and gave up two hits to allow the tying run to score.
Gappa relieved with one out and runners on first and second. He struck out the first batter he faced and induced a fielder's choice to stop Springfield's rally. Red Bluff managed a pair of base-runners in the bottom of the sixth, but the score remained tied at 3 going into the final inning.
Red Bluff's other runs came in the third and fifth innings. In the third, Stanton and Lance Zazueta hit back-to-back singles and Josh Penne advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Daniel Zelwick's one-out fly ball to center field knotted the game at 1, as Springfield drew first blood in the top half of the inning.
The Spartans took a 3-1 advantage in the fifth, starting with a leadoff single by Zazueta, who went 3-for-4 on the day. Zazueta was forced out on Penne's fielder's choice, Chris Jones walked and Zelwick loaded the bases with a single. Sandow walked on four pitches to drive in a run and Simon Villalvazo hit a sacrifice fly to center, plating Jones.
The Spartans' league game against Enterprise on Friday was canceled, and will be made up as part of a doubleheader on the road April 25. Red Bluff (2-0 EAL, 12-1) is playing at Paradise on Tuesday, April 1 and hosts Pleasant Valley on Friday, April 4.
