Rebels Open At The Chico Labor Day Invitational

By Paul Gadbois

The Red Bluff Rebels 18-and-under fall American Legion baseball squad opened its season last weekend in the Chico Nuts' Labor Day Invitational, winning two games and losing three.

Chico 2, Red Bluff 1

Robby Annis got the starting call in the season opener, and two unearned runs in the first inning was the difference in the Rebels' 2-1 defeat to the tourney hosts on Friday.
Annis allowed two hits in four innings of work, walking two and striking out six.
Red Bluff mounted a rally in the seventh inning, loading the bases with one out, but stranded the winning run in scoring position.
Simon Villalvazo singled but was picked off, and Jeremy Altman followed with a walk. Wyatt Dodero and Gerald Baker hit back-to-back singles to load the bases and Storm Lewis forced in a run with a base on balls, but the Nuts turned a 4-6-3 double play on the next batter to escape with the victory.
Villalvazo pitched two scoreless innings in relief and E.J. Stanton also worked a hitless seventh.
