Bulls American Legion 2008 – Archived GamesThe Red Bluff Bulls 19-and-under American Legion baseball program hosted a doubleheader with the Eureka Falcons on Saturday at Red Bluff High School.
The Bulls split with the Falcons, overcoming a shutout in the opener to win the nightcap for their third victory of the summer.
Eureka 11, Red Bluff 0
The Bulls generated base-runners in nearly every inning, but couldn't score in the first game, losing 11-0.
E.J. Stanton led off the bottom of the first with a walk, but was caught stealing, and Daniel Zelwick followed with a single. Garret Sinclair grounded into a fielder's choice and Derrick Emigh walked to put two runners on with two outs, but a strikeout ended the threat.
Ben Redfield was stranded in scoring position after reaching on an error in the second inning and Sinclair was left standing on second after a two-out double during the third.
In the fifth, Red Bluff loaded the bases with two outs, as Stanton singled and Zelwick and Sinclair walked back-to-back, but again the Bulls couldn't come up with a clutch hit.
As the Falcons rallied for six runs in the sixth, the Bulls were down to their final chance offensively, and it was then that they came closest to scoring.
Trevor Gipson led off the inning with a ground ball to shortstop that was misplayed for an error. He advanced on a flyout to right by Andrew Lish and remained at second base when Redfield reached on the third baseman's error. A passed ball moved both runners into scoring position with one out, but when Aaron Collier flied out to left, Gipson was gunned out at home plate trying to make it a sacrifice fly and get Red Bluff on the board.
Collier started on the mound for the Bulls. The stocky southpaw from Orland worked five innings, gave up three earned runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out four. Patrick Callahan of Cottonwood and Gipson, who will be a junior at Red Bluff next year, combined to finish the game in relief.

Unfazed by the opening-game defeat, the Bulls scored five runs in the first inning of the nightcap and buried the Falcons, 9-4.
Stanton walked and Zelwick was hit by a pitch to start the initial rally for Red Bluff. Sinclair beat out an infield single to load the bases and Collier lifted a blooper to shallow left that was caught by the shortstop, which allowed Stanton to tag up and score.
Gipson belted a two-out, two-run triple to right-center, scoring Zelwick and Sinclair, and Gipson scored on a RBI double by Jeff Evans, a Shasta High School recruit, to give the Bulls a 5-1 lead.
Lance Zazueta added fuel to the Bulls offense in the second inning with a circuit blast over the left-field wall, and Red Bluff added three more runs in the third.
Collier and Emigh stroked back-to-back singles and advanced to scoring position on a passed ball. Collier scored on a ground ball to the right side by Evans and Emigh crossed the plate on another passed ball. With Evans on third, Redfield laid down a sacrifice bunt for a run batted in, putting Red Bluff out in front 8-2.
Redfield pitched five solid innings for the victory, his first of the summer. He gave up three earned runs on seven hits, walked four and struck out one. Zelwick tossed two scoreless innings in relief, striking out two batters and giving up only one hit.

The Red Bluff Bulls 19-and-under American Legion baseball squad hosted two games with the Chico Nuts on Sunday, and suffered a pair of losses. The ticket called for a nine-inning opener and a seven-inning nightcap, and the fans had plenty to cheer about with 50 runs being scored between the two rival ballclubs.
Chico 25, Red Bluff 11
The Bulls had a tough night defensively and Chico piled up 21 hits to exacerbate the situation in the first game, sinking the Bulls 25-11. The game was called after eight innings due to the 10-run rule.
The teams were even at two runs apiece after the first inning, as E.J. Stanton drew a base on balls and Zelwick singled to open a rally for Red Bluff. Both runners were able to advance on an error in the outfield, which set up a two-run single for Garret Sinclair.
The Nuts scored four times in the top of the second, but Trevor Gipson singled and scored on an error to cut the Bulls' deficit to 6-3.
In the fourth, Chico scored four and Red Bluff came back with two in the bottom half. Andrew Lish was hit by a pitch and Gipson walked to start it off, and Ben Redfield drilled an opposite-field single to score Lish. Gipson advanced to third on the play and scored on a base hit by Stanton at the top of the order.
Red Bluff's offense picked up where it left off in the fifth, but the Nuts preceded the hosts' rally with three runs of their own to remain ahead.
Sinclair walked and dashed to third on a groundout to shortstop by Collier, and Josh Galbert scored Sinclair with a base knock. Galbert later scored on a ground out to the right side by Lish, but Chico held a 13-7 advantage after five innings.
Both teams scored four runs in the sixth; Red Bluff sent all nine batters to the plate during its rally.
Derrick Emigh, the Bulls' starting pitcher, walked and advanced to third on a two-bagger by Stanton. Emigh scored on a passed ball and back-to-back walks issued to Zelwick and Sinclair loaded the bases. Stanton and Zelwick came home on a two-run single by Aaron Collier. Sinclair was thrown out at home on an attempted double steal, but Collier managed to score from second on a single up the middle by Lish, his second RBI of the day.
Chico went on to score eight more runs over the next two innings to blow the game open. Emigh pitched 3 1/3 innings, Gipson and Stanton worked two innings each and Sinclair closed.
Of Chico's runs, 10 were unearned due to five errors committed by the Red Bluff defense.

Chico 12, Red Bluff 2
Red Bluff's defensive woes carried over into the second game Sunday night, as six errors contributed to a 12-2 defeat.
Bulls starter Andy Moreno kept Chico's offense silent until the third inning, which allowed Red Bluff to take a lead on the Nuts for the first time all night.
Stanton walked to lead off the first inning, took second on Josh Galbert's sacrifice bunt and scored on a two-out single to center by Aaron Collier.
The Nuts scored five unearned runs in the third, however, to go ahead 5-1.
Lance Zazueta hammered a 2-2 pitch over the left-field wall for his second home run in as many days to lead off the bottom of the third, but Red Bluff couldn't score again despite sending six more batters to the plate.
Galbert and Zelwick hit consecutive singles with one out and Ben Redfield walked with two outs, but a fielder's choice stranded the bases loaded.
Stanton's fifth-inning single was Red Bluff's only other hit, as the Nuts scored once in the fourth and six times in the fifth to enforce the 10-run mercy rule.
Moreno pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving up four earned runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Galbert finished the game in relief.
The Bulls (4-9) play in Chico's annual Father's Day Classic this weekend.
