Friday, April 25 - @ Enterprise (Game 1)
Daniel Zelwick pitched six strong innings and re-entered
as a reliever in the bottom of the seventh to close out an 11-5 victory Tuesday
in the first of Red Bluff's two league games versus Enterprise.
The Spartans agreed to play a road doubleheader after postponing the originally
scheduled game of March 28.
Zelwick gave up three runs (two earned) on eight hits in the start for his third
win of the year, walking only one batter while striking out six. Jeff Watson
struggled in the seventh, issuing three free passes and allowing two hits before
Zelwick returned to retire the final batter. He threw 6 1/3 innings total.
Red Bluff scored twice in the first inning and built a 7-0 lead by the top of
the third to give Zelwick plenty of breathing room.
Zelwick got it going himself with a leadoff single in the top of the first.
After he stole second, Josh Penne singled to put runners at the corners and
Lucas Sandow drove in the first run of the game with a base hit. Penne later
scored on a groundout to the right side by Lance Zazueta.
In the second, Ben Redfield led off with a hit, took
second on a passed ball, third on Jeremy Altman's comebacker to the mound and
home on another passed ball.
The Spartans loaded the bases with no outs to spell more trouble for the Hornets
in the third, as Penne and Simon Villalvazo walked and Sandow was hit by a
pitch. Penne scored on a passed ball and E.J. Stanton drilled a two-run single
to plate Sandow and Cody Gappa, who entered the game as a courtesy runner for
the catcher, Villalvazo. Stanton rounded second and took third on Redfield's
single and Altman bunted up the first-base side to sacrifice himself for a run
batted in.
The Hornets broke up Zelwick's shutout in the bottom of the third but Red Bluff
piled on three more runs in the sixth to lead 10-1.
Zelwick and Penne slapped back-to-back singles and after Penne stole second,
Villalvazo delivered a two-run single. Gappa, running for Villalvazo again,
scored after a pair of infield errors, which enabled Zazueta and Stanton to
reach base. Redfield singled for his third hit of the day to load the bases but
the threat ended there with a fielder's choice at home plate.
The Spartans added another run in the top of the seventh to counter two put up
by Enterprise in the sixth.
Sandow singled with two outs, advanced on a passed ball and scored on a RBI
single by Villalvazo.
