Tuesday, April 8 - @ Shasta

The Red Bluff varsity baseball team struggled offensively and couldn't overcome Shasta's four-run third inning, losing 5-2 on the road Tuesday.
Sophomore Cody Gappa was handed the first defeat of his varsity career, as the Wolves knocked him out of the game after three innings. He gave up four runs (two earned) on three hits, walked three and struck out one. Daniel Zelwick tossed three solid innings in relief, yielding just one run, but the Spartans couldn't hit with runners in scoring position.
Red Bluff stranded five runners in scoring position during the first three innings, and couldn't get anyone past first base after that.
Ben Redfield singled to lead off the second inning, took second on a passed ball and third on a hit by Gappa. Redfield crossed on a groundout to the right side by Stephen Collins.
In the third, Zelwick led off with a single and took second and third on passed balls. E.J. Stanton walked with two outs and Redfield singled home Zelwick for Red Bluff's only other run.
Two Spartans were caught stealing by Wolves catcher Stephen Somers — Collins and Lance Zazueta — to hinder Red Bluff's offensive efforts.
Shasta's right fielder, Morgan Stanton, a junior, also clubbed a pair of home runs out of the nine-hole to lead the Wolves to victory.
Red Bluff (3-2 EAL, 13-3) hosts Oroville on Friday at 7 p.m. to wrap up the first half of league play.
